The story of Memoryshaker

For most of us, at about 65 years of age, brain function starts to slow down. By age 70, mental decline limits many who are otherwise physically still quite fit. At age 80, one of five people will have Alzheimer’s. It seems that the body outlasts the brain.

There are regions in the world however where old people stay mentally much fitter. Studies such as the India-US study of Alzheimer’s (Neurology 2001;57:985-989) show that people in rural parts of Asia maintain excellent memory even at old age. Nutrition was found to be key for this memory preservation. Diets rich in anti-oxidant herbs and spices are especially beneficial.

As a neuroscientist and neurosurgeon, I was intrigued that nutrition helps brain function. This confirmed what I had learned as a medical student. From 1990 to 1991, I had spent a year in China to study traditional herbal and oriental medicine. During that time, I started collecting information on herbs and spices from European and Asian medical texts. My special attention was on foods with nootropic or memory-enhancing properties.

Over the years, more herbs were included in my list of memory-enhancing foods. I also realized that herbs do not get absorbed well when swallowed as a pill with water. Rather, they need to be naturally taken with food to absorb fat-soluble as well as water-soluble nutrients. Most interestingly, these herbs, when properly balanced, taste great. Therefore, I simply combined the herbs I found essential for me, created a culinary herb-spice blend, and called it “Memoryshaker”. For a long time, Memoryshaker was only available to my family and friends. Many people were interested, so we recently obtained a license from the Washington State Department of Agriculture to produce it. All ingredients are 100% organic so that all the important trace elements and nutrients are naturally present in the herbs, and to make sure there are no unwanted toxins, pesticides or chemicals.

Will it help? As a scientist, I only believe in controlled randomized studies, and we are eager to systematically study Memoryshaker in the future. There is good data available on many of the single ingredients, and by combining these herbs, we likely stack the odds in our favor.

Personally, we have been blessed with excellent memory. Friends who use Memoryshaker tell us they enjoy a sensation of mental clarity and feel energized.

We hope you like the taste of Memoryshaker. The future will tell if enriching our food with these herbs and spices will keep our memory strong. Please remember to share your experiences; we will be delighted to hear back from you.
